The Afterglow of Grb 010222: a Case of Continuous Energy Injection
نویسنده
چکیده
The optical lightcurve of GRB 010222 exhibited one of the slowest decays of any gamma-ray burst to date. Its broadband properties have been difficult to explain with conventional afterglow models, as they either require the power law index of the underlying electron energy distribution to be low, p < 2, or that the outflow is quasi-spherical thus reviving the energy problem. We argue that the slow decay of GRB 010222 and a linear polarization of 1.36 ± 0.64%, is naturally explained by a jet model with continuous energy injection. The electron energy distribution then has p = 2.49± 0.05, fully consistent with the expectation from detailed modelling of acceleration in relativistic shocks, that p > 2, thus alleviating the “p-problem”. Energy Injection in Grb Afterglow Models
We extend the standard fireball model, widely used to interpret gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow light curves, to include energy injections, and apply the model to the afterglow light curves of GRB 990510, GRB 000301C and GRB 010222. We show that discrete energy injections can cause temporal variations in the optical light curves and present fits to the light curves of GRB 000301C as an example....
متن کاملOptical and radio observations of the bright GRB 010222 afterglow: evidence for rapid synchrotron cooling?
We report photometric observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 010222 in V , R and I passbands carried out between 22–27 February 2001 at Nainital. We determine the CCD Johnson BV and Cousins RI photometric magnitudes for 31 stars in the field of GRB 010222 and use them to calibrate our measurements as well as other published BV RI photometric magnitudes of the GRB 010222 afterglow. We cons...
متن کاملOptical Photometry of the GRB 010222 Afterglow
The optical afterglow of GRB 010222 was observed using the recently installed 2-m telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory Hanle and the telescopes at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, beginning ∼ 0.6 day after the detection of the event. The results based on these photometric observations combined with others reported in the literature are presented in this paper. The R band light ...

متن کاملThe X-ray afterglow flat segment in short GRB 051221A: Energy injection from a millisecond magnetar?
In GRB 051221A, an X-ray afterglow flat segment lasting ∼ 10 seconds represents the first clear case of strong energy injection in the external shock of a short GRB afterglow. In this work, we show that a millisecond pulsar with dipole magnetic field ∼ 10 Gauss could well account for that energy injection. The good quality X-ray flat segment thus suggests that the central engine of this short b...
